The “Klinieken Noord-Antwerpen” (KLINA) foundation was created on 15 October 1987. On 1 January 1988, the association took over the management of the three regional hospitals in the Northern Antwerp region: St-Lucas Ziekenhuis in Ekeren, St.-Jozef Ziekenhuis in Kapellen and Vesiliusziekenhuis in Brasschaat.
New builds
In the period 1988-1989, the number of hospital beds was reduced by 147, partly by centralizing mother-and-child care onto a single campus. From 1990 onwards, the location for a merged hospital to be constructed was determined and plans for it were drawn up. Construction work started in 1994. In October 1999, the medical activities of the three ‘old’ campuses could move to the new hospital.
